Biography
Background
Kari Virtanen (born 1948) is a Finnish cabinetmaker and the founder of Nikari. He grew up in the South Ostrobothnia region of Finland and learned woodworking from elder master cabinetmakers, advancing to pattern maker. In 1967, at nineteen, he opened a one-man workshop in the former Nikkarinkoski joinery in Seinäjoki. In 1993 Nikari moved to the old ironworks village of Fiskars, drawn by its rich selection of tree species.
Signature Style
Virtanen's work starts from the material: an expert knowledge of the many wood species of northern Europe, traditional joinery and restrained Nordic forms. Nikari describes him as, above all, a carpenter — one who has taken on everything from concrete moulds to revival furniture and worked across many architects' design languages.
Notable Works
- Wooden parts for Alvar Aalto's Lakeuden Risti parish centre in Seinäjoki — his first commission
- Plywood boxes and suitcases developed with Kaj Franck in the 1970s
- Nikari's Periferia collection, including the KVJ3 sauna stool (1997)
Legacy
Virtanen received the Bruno Mathsson Award (1987), the Finnish State Prize for Design (2005), honorary membership of the University of Art and Design Helsinki (2005), the Pro Finlandia medal (2009) and the Kaj Franck Design Prize (2022).
