Biography
Background
Jonathan Muecke is an American designer and architect (Wikipedia), born in 1983, who works from a studio in Minnesota. He trained as an architect, interned with Herzog & de Meuron in Basel and pursued an art degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art before establishing his own practice.
Signature Style
Knoll describes a practice that makes the most out of an idea, often with a single material such as wood, aluminum or carbon fiber, and with objects repeated in various scales and proportions. His work resists standard classification and blurs the lines between design, art and architecture.
Notable Works
He made his debut with a solo exhibition at Volume Gallery in Chicago in 2011 and designed the architectural pavilion at Design Miami in 2014. For Knoll he created the Muecke Wood Collection, his first commercial collaboration with the brand.
Legacy
The Art Institute of Chicago staged his first major museum show in 2022, and his work has entered museum collections in several countries, among them the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Vitra Design Museum.
