Biography

Background

Jangir Maddadi is a Kurdish-born, Swedish designer. His passion for drawing began during 13 years in an Iraqi refugee camp, and after his family moved to Sweden in 1993 he was inspired by Scandinavian design and the work of Alvar Aalto. He studied design at the Linnaeus University School of Design in Pukeberg and leads the studio Jangir Maddadi Design Bureau (JMDB).

Signature Style

He describes his goal as creating "functional sculptures" that balance form, function and material. Everything is produced in southern Sweden, with sustainable materials sought nearby, and the pieces are meant to be passed down through generations as timeless design.

Notable Works

  • Union family of seating, his first project finished in 2008, with organic shapes, durable material and many combinations
  • Popsicle bin collection for TreCe, winner of the German Design Award 2023 and the NYC X Design Award 2021
  • Compound, modular seating developed for Hong Kong MTR stations
  • Nodo, a modular seating system for public space
  • Vendicari outdoor collection for Cappellini

Legacy

The studio's work spans public benches, seating systems, lamps and chairs, from Union to the Vendicari pieces made in Italy for Cappellini.
