Background
Ilse Crawford (born 1962 in London) is a British interior and furniture designer. According to Wikipedia she studied history at Bedford College, worked in an architecture firm and at the Architects' Journal, and was the launch editor of Elle Decoration before a spell with Donna Karan in 1998 and the move into design. Her own site calls her a designer, teacher, creative director and founder of Studioilse.
Approach
Studioilse describes her work as humanistic design: design that addresses real human needs and is meant to have a positive mental and environmental impact. She sums it up as design as a frame for life, and the studio, a team of fourteen, works on homes, hotels, restaurants, schools, offices, shops, furniture and objects.
Furniture and Objects
The studio's list of things pairs its designs with manufacturers, among them the Sinnerlig Collection for IKEA (2015), the Ilse Sofa for George Smith (2014), the Touch Collection for Zanat (2017), Betwixt Seating for Herman Miller (2020), the Bruno chair for SCP (2021) and The Ilse Collection for Georg Jensen (2012). For Carl Hansen & Søn it lists the CH24 Birthday Edition (2020) and the CH24 Wishbone chair colours (2022).
Recognition
Wikipedia records an MBE in 2014 and a CBE in 2021 for services to design, and a profile in the first season of the Netflix series Abstract: The Art of Design. She founded the Man and Wellbeing department at the Design Academy Eindhoven and headed it for two decades, according to Studioilse.
