Biografia
Background
Eero Aarnio (born 21 July 1932 in Helsinki) is a Finnish designer and a pioneer of modern furniture in plastics. He studied at Helsinki's School of Applied Arts from 1954 to 1957, worked for Asko from 1960 to 1962, and opened his own design office in Helsinki in 1962.
Design Approach
Aarnio began experimenting in the 1960s with plastics, vivid colours and organic forms. His official biography describes the Ball Chair (1963), Pastil (1968) and Bubble (1968) as works that captured the era's pop culture. Eero Aarnio Originals characterises his method as distinctly Finnish and function-led: visual expression and function develop together, while new materials open paths to new forms.
Selected Works
- Ball Chair (1963), internationally launched at the Cologne furniture fair in 1966
- Pastil and Bubble chairs (1968)
- Pony (1974)
- Rocket Bar Stool for Artek (1995)
- Double Bubble lighting series (presented in 2003)
