Biography
Background
Dror Benshetrit works in New York as the head of Dror, a studio that practices product design, architecture and art direction. His style grows from two sources: the technical knowledge he learned at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, and a love of art that comes from his studies at the Center for Art Education in Tel Aviv. He moved to New York and founded the studio there.
Signature Style
Dror's work seeks the origins of form and movement through the use of materials and the strategic employment of technology, and the studio calls itself an idea-driven design practice guided by a holistic core concept. He is described as fascinated by geometry, physics and poetry.
Notable Works
For Cappellini he designed the Peacock armchair, in which he interprets the concept of geometry in a soft, organic manner. The studio has collaborated with Boffi, Levi's, Surface Magazine, Swarovski and Rosenthal, with which he won the iF Product Design Award in 2006, and with Alessi, Bentley, SHVO, Target and TUMI.
Legacy
He won GE Plastics' Merging Boundaries design competition in 2001, and later received Good Design Awards in 2008 and 2010 and a Red Dot Award in 2012. His work is in the permanent collections of major museums in North America, Europe and the Middle East, and a board seat at New York's Museum of Arts and Design is part of his current commitments.
