Biography

Background

Colin King trained professionally as a dancer in New York City before moving into interiors, where he worked across design firms in content creation and art direction. He is based in Tribeca, New York City, and balances being on set, styling and designing from his studio. The American stylist, designer and creative director founded Colin King Studio, whose practice spans styling, creative direction, product design and installation.

Signature Style

His work sits at the point where a dancer's awareness of space meets a stylist's impulse to bring it to life, and he is inspired by everyday rituals, gestures and imperfections made beautiful by their presence within a space. The work is rooted in restraint, atmosphere and emotional precision, and in the belief that what is placed, and how it is placed, shapes how people feel.

Notable Works

For Audo Copenhagen he designed the Interconnect Candle Holder, the Pavot Bowl, Vase and Centerpiece, the Stance Vase, the Relevé Platter, the Surround Vase, the Taper Bowl, the Converge Bookends, the Divot Tray, the Rond Bowl, the Sentiment Paper Weight and the Crescent Shelving. His first book, Arranging Things, was published by Rizzoli, and a collaboration with Zara Home produced a series of sculptural objects.

Legacy

King is Artistic Director of the Marrakech-based rug company BENI and writes The Last Layer, a Substack about styling and mood. He has styled for Architectural Digest and T Magazine and contributes to ELLE DECOR and Ark Journal.
