Collection Story
Origin
Soriana is a family of upholstered seating designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina. Cassina's text for the family says it came into being in 1969, from an intuitive vision of the couple that was "destined to re-write the history of upholstered furniture". The production years on the Soriana pages read 1969/2021, and the heading of the product sheet reads 1970/2021.
A shape held by its structure
According to the same text, the Scarpas used new polyurethane foam forming techniques to make seating that, for the first time, needs no internal support: it takes its shape from the grip of the metal structure around it. Cassina places it between formal and informal, open to new lifestyles. Soriana received the Compasso d'Oro in 1970, which the text calls "a masterpiece of complexity achieved through simple tools".
The Cassina LAB update
The text says the inner padding based on BioFoam® microspheres, a bioplastic of plant origin, comes from an update developed by Cassina and Tobia Scarpa within the Cassina LAB project, which promotes wellbeing and sustainable design. It adds a seat padding of recycled blown fibre made from PET recovered by Plastic Bank®.
In Tobia Scarpa's words
The pages carry a line attributed to Tobia Scarpa, 2021: "Soriana is a breath of essential relaxation."
