Collection Story
Karuma by Eric Jourdan
Karuma is an Eric Jourdan range for Ligne Roset that currently has two pieces: an occasional table and a sideboard. Jourdan says the range was designed to get closer to "an economical script" built on the work on "proportions and a choice of very pure materials".
Reference points and method
Jourdan places the range close to Japanese architecture and to furniture designed by Jean Michel Franck. Overlays and recesses stand in for woodwork details, and raw steel replaces sophisticated wood species. He calls the formal simplicity of the whole "an appeal to go to the essential".
The two pieces
The occasional table is round, 354 mm in diameter and 450 mm high, and weighs 13 kg. Its base and top are solid whitened oak, with a black lacquered steel base. The sideboard measures 1,900 mm wide, 400 mm deep and 700 mm high and weighs 81 kg. Its base is whitened oak veneer, its chest and doors are black-stained veneer, and the doors open by push catch without handles.
