Collection Story
Origin
The Hee Collection is a series of steel wire chairs and stools by the Danish furniture designer Hee Welling, made in a long-time collaboration with HAY. Welling founded his studio in Copenhagen in 2003, and the series dates from 2005. The aim was an archetypal chair refined to its last detail, with everything beyond the essentials cut away, so that a contemporary chair could suit many different settings. The result is pragmatic and easy to decode: like a line drawing, it wraps metres of wire into neat, straight lines, in three versions of bar stool, lounge chair and dining chair.
HAY has extended the series with designs in a hot galvanised finish. A seat cushion is offered as an option for the chairs and stools.
Design Language
Every chair and stool in the series is made from a single material, steel wire, in solid rods, either powder coated for the outdoors or hot dip galvanised. The pieces are stackable and weatherproof, and the wide assortment of colours and designs suits indoor and outdoor contexts, such as bars and restaurants, public spaces and home environments. Five powder coated colours are joined by hot galvanised steel, and plastic gliders in matching colours are standard, with black gliders on the hot dip galvanised versions.
Stacking limits depend on the type: bar stools stack on the floor up to 10 pieces, dining chairs up to 15 and lounge chairs up to 20. For conference use the chairs can be joined into rows, using a grey plastic floor linking device that is not premounted to the frame.
