Collection Story
Origin
Cassina offers a small group of designs by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld and files them with the masters of its iMaestri collection. Wikipedia dates his Red and Blue Chair to 1917, the year he opened his own furniture workshop.
Design Language
Cassina's portrait of Rietveld rests on two personalities, a cabinet-maker and an architect whose activities alternate, overlap and fuse. The Zig Zag is presented as one of the first cantilevered chairs in solid wood, formed by flat elements joined in sequence.
Key Pieces
- Zig Zag chair (1934), in Cassina production since 1973
