Collection Story
Origin
Cotone is a family by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Cassina. On cassina.com the family is represented by the chair, which Cassina's sheet 140 treats as a dining seat with low arms and armchair-level comfort, together with the Cotone Slim version drawn on the same sheet. The page title and description on cassina.com also present Cotone as a modular sofa by the two designers, with an aluminium frame and customizable comfort.
Design language
Cassina's family text sets an extruded aluminium frame, minimalist on the surface, against an interior composition it calls industrially sophisticated. Against that frame sit soft cushioned upholstery that the text compares to an inviting nest for relaxation. The sheet names the contrast between a rigorous minimal line and a soft seat as the heart of the project, notes that the extruded profiles were made exclusively for this model, and says the Bouroullecs drew on Cassina's great classics.
Key pieces
- Cotone chair: extruded aluminium frame in anodised or painted finishes, with feather-quilted padding, joints cast in aluminium and black plastic feet, per the sheet.
- Cotone Slim: the slim-line version, with leather or fabric covering and no feather-quilted layer; the sheet gives it a thin wadding layer over foam instead.
- Cotone sofa: presented on cassina.com as a modular sofa with an aluminium frame.
Cassina adds that freely combining frame colours with its range of leather and fabric upholstery lets each buyer assemble a chair to personal taste.
