The series

Thonet presents the 404 as Chair Series 404/404F under the line "... something like this can only be done in wood". The range comprises the slender 404, the slightly wider 404 F with armrests, the upholstered 404 SP and 404 SPF, and the 404 H wooden barstool.

The 2018 update

Ten years after the market launch Thonet and Stefan Diez changed the slender 404, the 404 F and the barstool 404 H from beech to oak. Alongside natural oak the range gained six stain shades, and the backrest incline was reshaped three-dimensionally. The Neue Sammlung in Munich took the chair, with prototypes, mock-ups and a disassembled version, into its collection in September 2018.
