Overview
Ilmari Tapiovaara developed the Mademoiselle Lounge Chair for the home in 1956. Artek describes a solid-birch chair informed by traditional Finnish seating and reconsidered through a modern design approach.
Construction
An age-old construction method supports the spoke back, while the seat has a softly rounded edge. The legs, seat and backrest are solid birch, offered with white lacquer or black stain.
Specifications
The official product drawing labels W 55 × D 66 × H 94 cm, with a 41 cm seat height.
Geschichte
Tradition reconsidered
Tapiovaara drew on traditional Finnish chairs when developing Mademoiselle. Rather than reproducing a historic type, he combined its spoke-back language and established joinery with smooth modernist seat curves.
Designed for domestic space
Artek states that this low chair was specifically developed for the home. The fixed lounge version shares its name and year with a separate rocking chair, while retaining its own 66 cm depth and fixed-leg construction.
