Superimposed shells
Do-Maru is a 2016 small armchair by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. Two padded bodies form the seat shell, which can be covered in fabric or leather; a cast-aluminium rear support and tubular-steel front support carry the form.
Upholstered structure
Hard polyurethane makes the seat and back shell, while flexible cold-shaped polyurethane foam provides the upholstery. The rear leg is die-cast aluminium, the front leg uses steel profiles, and thermoplastic ferrules finish the supports.
DM77 dimensions
The technical drawing labels the chair at 77 × 66.5 × 71.5 cm, with a 49.5 cm arm height and 39 cm seat height.
故事
A name from samurai armour
Do-Maru takes its name from the ancient armour worn by samurai warriors. B&B Italia relates the reference to thick decorated leather plates that enclosed and protected the body.
A shell developed after Almora
The manufacturer connects Do-Maru to Doshi Levien's earlier Almora armchair through the use of superimposed bodies. Here the conical profile is underlined by a cast-aluminium rear support and a separate tubular front support.
