Outdoor armchair forms

Bay is an outdoor seating design by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, dated 2018 by B&B Italia. The family includes three armchair drawings, from a lower 75 cm model to the high-backed BY123A. Its enclosing braided shell surrounds the padded seat and soft cushions.

Weather-oriented construction

A steel inner frame and aluminium back frame support Bay. The padding uses cold-shaped Bayfit® polyurethane under a water-repellent polyester-fibre cover, while the back combines Solotex fibre with viscoelastic polyurethane. Polypropylene-fibre braiding forms the outer volume; a coated PES protective cover is also specified.

BY123A dimensions

The largest high-back drawing measures 123 × 102 × 122 cm, with a labelled seat height of 42.5 cm.

A monolithic outdoor collection

Doshi Levien conceived Bay as a group of braided outdoor furnishings whose shell-like volumes enclose the seating. B&B Italia dates the design to 2018 and presents the collection as carrying the elegance, comfort and refinement of its indoor products into braided outdoor forms.

Transparency through double braiding

The visual idea depends on two layers of braiding rather than a solid enclosure. Air pockets between the strands give the tall surrounding shell transparency and lightness, while the padded seat and soft cushions form its centre.
