Background
Gordon Guillaumier was educated in Malta, Switzerland, England and Italy. He graduated in industrial design from IED Milan in 1991 and completed a master's degree in industrial design at Domus Academy the following year. He worked as a senior designer with Rodolfo Dordoni from 1992 to 1995 and with Driade from 1995 to 1998.
Studio and approach
After beginning freelance work in 1999, Guillaumier founded Studio Gordon Guillaumier in Milan in 2002. The multidisciplinary practice works across products, interiors, architecture, displays and consulting. Its stated approach starts with sensory inputs—sight, touch, sound, taste and smell—and translates them into projects.
Product and art direction
His product work spans indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, ceramics, hardware, carpets, tableware and objects. His official biography lists collaborations with Minotti, Lema, Moroso, Roda, Thonet, Tacchini, Desalto, Driade, Oluce and Foscarini, among others. He has also developed art-direction strategies for Desalto, Dornbracht Interiors, Pamar and Ceramiche Piemme, and has worked on Roda's art direction with Rodolfo Dordoni since 2006.
Recognition and teaching
The studio lists recognition from the ADI Design Index, Interzum, Wallpaper* Design Awards, Compasso d'Oro, Archiproducts Design Awards and NYCxDESIGN. Guillaumier has lectured at Politecnico di Milano's industrial-design faculty and served as a visiting design professor at Abadir Design Academy in Catania.
