起源
赫曼米勒（Herman Miller）的时间线记载，D. J. 德普里（D. J. De Pree）在《生活》（Life）杂志上看到一篇关于乔治·尼尔森（George Nelson）及其“储物墙”设计的文章后，于1945年聘请尼尔森为公司首任设计总监。1948年，公司出版并发售了一本精装目录，由尼尔森撰写，并由尼尔森事务所（Nelson Office）设计。
设计语言
一篇关于平台长凳（Platform Bench）的历史文章将首个官方尼尔森系列定于1948年，并指出其柜体与长凳被规划为可扩展的模块化元素，能够相互组合使用，而非成套的家具组合。该品牌店铺将这一系列划分为若干较小的产品族，例如Platform、Pedestal、Swag、Thin Edge、Cane和Marshmallow。
